A 2024 NEW YORK TIMES NOTABLE BOOK
Selected by TIME, NPR, ELLE, Parade, Woman’s World, and other publications as a Must-Read Book of 2024!
Peter, Daphne’s fiancé, constantly narrated their story in a way that she adored. How they returned to his village by the lake to start a life together after meeting on a stormy day and falling in love over a misplaced hat. Up until he discovered that he was truly in love with Petra, his childhood best friend, he was quite adept at telling it.
Daphne starts her new story like this: stranded in picturesque Waning Bay, Michigan, with no family or friends but a dream job as a children’s librarian (which barely covers the bills), and offering to share a room with Petra’s ex-boyfriend Miles Nowak, the only person who might possibly sympathize with her situation.
Miles, whose coworkers know so little about her that they have a running bet that she’s either FBI or in witness protection, is the complete opposite of the sensible, buttoned-up Daphne. She is scruffy and disorganized, and she has a tendency to find comfort in the sounds of heartbreak love songs. Initially avoiding each other, the roommates eventually develop a precarious camaraderie and a strategy while drowning their sorrows. Who could blame them if that plan also includes publishing purposefully deceptive pictures of their summertime excursions together?
Naturally, though, it’s all for show because Daphne would never truly begin a new chapter in her life by falling in love with her ex-fiance’s new fiancée’s ex.
