The Stewarts are falling apart.

Pete is an agnostic and Mae is a fundamentalist Christian, and the two of them are raising three very perplexed young girls.

They relocate their expanding family to a new subdivision and a new house in the hopes of starting over in a desperate attempt to keep their marriage intact.

Rather, they gradually realize that they are not alone in their new home. Because something evil follows them around, feeding on their pain, savoring their anxieties, and enhancing their worst tendencies.

Mae knows the truth, but Pete is in denial.
